For Parents As a parent, you are the most important influence in your child’s life. At Connection Institute, we’re here to equip you with accurate information, tools, and resources to help your child make healthy choices about life, love, sex, and relationships. Together, we can empower them to thrive. DID YOU KNOW? There are 26 million new STIs in the United States each year. 50% of those were in 15-24 year olds. All our medical information is collected from the Centers for Disease Control and the Mayo Clinic. The rest of the information is collected from several resources including evidence-based and peer-reviewed studies. We update citations on an annual basis. To see a complete list of resources for each grade, go to our website and click on the "Parents" tab, then scroll down to locate them under "Helpful Documents." What do you base your curriculum on? We seek to provide accurate, up to date medical information and community resources as well as teach the key concepts laid out in the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program for personal and social development for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students. Are all 5 days spent discussing the topic of sex? No. Only 2-3 days are dedicated to medically accurate information including reproductive health and STIs. The rest of the classes cover healthy relationships and life choices in accordance to the Missouri and Kansas state education requirements. For 7th and 9th grade students, we separate the students by gender to educate over anatomy-based lessons. Why are parents required to do homework with the students? Compass homework is designed to help start discussions within the home to ultimately connect parents to their students. We know that students want to hear what their parents think about the topics covered and care about what they say. Both parties learn about and from each other. Do you teach the students how to perform sexual acts or talk about sexual orientation/identity? No. We do not teach or encourage sexual activity. The kinds/types of sex are carefully presented in the context of understanding risk and making safe, informed choices regarding the dangers of STD/STIs. While we do discuss personal identity like life goals, we do not teach about sexual identity or orientation. Does your organization present religious beliefs to the students? No. This program adheres to the same regulations as public-school curriculum; therefore, we do not present our own beliefs in the classroom. Are condoms brought into the classroom and do you hand them out to the students? No. Educators do spend a day teaching over medically accurate statistics and myth busting condoms with information from the CDC. They do not bring any condoms or other contraceptives into the classroom, nor do they distribute any form of contraception.
